Solution
Create an app that will combat a social justice issue that targets an audience you are not a part of.
The tech industry has a major gender disparity in their workforce that is largely due due to the lack of womxn who apply to tech positions.
This app will allow hiring professions to easily search for womxn who are match their job description and reach out to them to apply.
Target Audience
My primary target audience is hiring professionals at Silicon Valley tech companies. My secondary audience is womxn who are applying to tech positions at Silicon Valley companies.
According to census data from 2019, merely 15% of engineering jobs are filled by women.
User Research
In order to gain an understanding of the users needs and motivations, I conducted online research, a SWOT analysis, then finally interviews with my target audience.
Interview Questions
What do you look for in an applicant when recruiting?
Do you think steps should be taken to diversify the workplace?
Are there any steps being taken to diversify the workplace?
What steps do you think need to be taken to diversify the workplace?
What do you think caused the gender disparity within the tech industry?
Getting to Know the User
After conducting my research, I create two personas of users who fall into our primary and secondary target audience:
“Software is ubiquitous and used by every member of society. Having diversity in the workforce allows diverse viewpoints and data to be considered early in design.” - Rajnish Chitkara
Ideation
In order to process my ideas along with account for my user research, I create an affinity map and user flow chart.
Visual Design
Low-Fidelity Prototypes
Mid-Fidelity Prototypes
High-Fidelity Prototypes
Tasks
I fully prototypes four tasks:
From the recruiter’s perspective:
Sign up as Amazon
Search for an message Emily Zou
From the applicants perspective:
Log in as Emily Zou
Respond to a message from Amazon
User Testing
I conducted usability tests with my classmates who were part of a demographic similar to my secondary audience, womxn between the ages of 18-24 who plan to apply to jobs in the tech and design industry. Overall, the test ran smoothly and I received positive feedback about the visuals and color scheme. However, users had trouble when it came to the search function because I did not prototype the search button. I wanted people to go to the add filter button but that was not the first instinct of the user. They also told me that the back button in the chat function does not match the rest of the visuals.
