Design and the Play Instinct

Book Layout Design

Process

The moment we got this assignment I decided I did not want to take the minimalistic approach. Given that this design manifesto is about finding the joy of teaching design, I wanted to maintain a playful aesthetic throughout the book design. I chose a light shade of purple and used a three column grid to guide every page layout. For four weeks, I went through the process of design, print, redesign, repeat until it was ready to be printed and perfectly bound into a book.

Layout Sketches

This design for print layout project utilizes one color, systems, and grids to reflect the message of Design and the Play Instinct by Paul Rand. I would like to give a special thanks to Professor Jiayi Young for guiding me through this project and typography course.

Understanding the Text
